Parents are so used to being in charge and controlling their kids, that most of them find it hard to let go of their children. Parting becomes painful. With nuclear families and less number of children in the family, the child/ children become the prime focus. Many parents view "parting" as diminishing authority or loss of power. But, the secret of good parenting lies in Setting them Free...
Accept it!
Parting is bound to happen, someday, so you would be wise to Accept it, rather than fight it. The first parting comes when your child leaves for school. It's hard on the child, but some parents make it harder by not preparing the child, or letting go of her happily. Kids are sympathetic to your emotions, so they will sense it if you are tense or anxious, and will resist the parting.
Prepare the child!
Just as no exam can be written without adequate preparation, you will need to prepare your child for the separation. Don't get teary eyed and weepy about it. Make the parting sound like fun. Talk of the fun time your child will have in school, talk about the painting, the games etc. Make him feel all "grown up" and he is sure to look forward to it!
Find a Friend..
This is going to be your child's first step into the social world. He is going to leave the cocoon and step into the sunshine. Find out who are the other children joining the same school. If there are any kids in the neighborhood, introduce the children. Once they are familiar with each other, the transition will be smoother.
A gift for your child..
Learning to set your child, free is an art. What is more, this is the best gift you can give your child!
- It reassures your child that you are there for him
- Convey to him, that your love for him will not diminish if you set him free
- At the same time it will make him feel "grown up"
- He will learn to be more independent
- He is less likely to develop psychological problems later on in life.
- He will make friends his age
