When a child's behaviour impairs either his development, or his ability to get along with other children or adults, he is perceived to be behaviourally challenged.
These problems need to be addressed early in life. Or they could lead to social predicaments or even academic failure.
Parenting a child with behavioural challenges is not always easy. And a parent thus confronted, could do with some tips to help her face this problem with confidence.
Here are a few vital tips for parents who need to face this challenge:
Set a routine. Such children are more comfortable when they know what's coming next. If there are any changes, give them advance notice and keep reinforcing the changes. But give them time to get used to it.
Practise patience, patience and more patience. You're probably going to have to teach your child the same things over and over again. The chances are that more often than not, he will forget what you have told him.
You do need to discipline him. But it helps if you reinforce what he needs to do rather than what he shouldn't do. Promote correct behaviour and reward him for it. This works better than punishing him when he does something wrong.
Learn to identify traumatic behaviour before it really sets in. Your child will be sending out some kind of a signal - like suddenly becoming very quiet or sulking or crying. If you address the problem right then, it could help ward off the crisis altogether.
Set up a home that is conducive to his needs. Delicate breakables should be put away. Don't overcrowd your rooms with furniture. That could stress him out. Make your home a comfortable, relaxing place for your child.
Show your child that you love him, no matter what. Set time aside to have fun with him. The more you laugh in his company, the better he will feel about himself. Give him more than his share of cuddles and kind words. It will go a long way towards encouraging positive behaviour.
