How far away is the Sun from us?
The average distance of the Sun from the Earth is less than 150 million kilometres. However, the Earth does not travel around the Sun in a path (orbit) that is perfectly circular. Instead, the Earth goes round the Sun in an elliptical orbit. So, its distance from the Sun varies throughout the year. When at its closest to the Sun, the distance between the Earth and the Sun is less than 147 million kilometres. Then the Earth is known to be at perihelion. When at its farthest from the Sun, the distance between the Earth and the Sun is a little over 152 million kilometres. In this case, the Earth is known to be at aphelion.
