Homework

Homework. It's getting to be a big deal nowadays. Children seem to be spending a fair amount of their evenings bent over their books while they try to get through their daily quota.

With the standard of education being pretty high, we need to ask ourselves a few vital questions.

  • How much of homework is really necessary?

  • Doesn't it add to the already heavy burden children nowadays seem to carry?

  • Does homework really help them perform better?

  • Having spent a whole day in school, should children have their noses in their books all through the evenings too?

  • When do children get to play or take up some extracurricular activity seriously?

What purpose is homework supposed to serve? It is primarily to keep parents informed about what the children learn in school. A few minutes of homework helps a child brush up and reinforce what he or she has been taught that day.

But research has shown that more homework doesn't make children smarter. In fact, it tires their brain and gets them disinterested in lessons.

Homework also cuts into family time and prevents children from bonding well with parents and siblings. It promotes a sedentary lifestyle even among young children. After-school hours should be used to play a sport, bond with friends and take up hobbies.

So what can parents do to help their children?

  • Get together with other parents at a PTA meeting and talk to the teachers about excessive homework.

  • Try structuring the homework time. At that time everybody at home does some work. The mother can perhaps do the household chores, the father can deal with official files and the children can do homework.

  • Encourage children to finish off their homework as soon as possible.

  • Get children to go out and have a boisterous game after a session of homework.

  • Do not watch TV or have a loud and animated conversation if your child is with his books.

It is important that children have a healthy all round development. Academics shouldn't be viewed as the be all and end all in life.
