Day-to-day activities such as writing, drawing, colouring, buttoning, tying shoelaces, turning door knocks and using scissors require the use and co-ordination of the small (finer) muscles of the BODY, i.e., muscles of the hands, wrists and fingers. Along with this, eye-hand co-ordination is also essential to complete such tasks.
Here is a list of activities for pre-schoolers that can help in the development of the finer muscles and in fostering better eye-hand co-ordination:
- Stringing activities
- Activities using pebbles, beads and seeds
- Activities involving construction
- Activities involving sand and water
- Art activities
Materials required: The materials required for such activities include bangles, spoons, leaves, flowers, beads, seeds, bottle caps, marbles, blocks, colours, pen, paper, paints, cardboard pieces, and blunt-edged scissors.
Art activities:
Art and craft activities using crayons, pencils, brushes and paints for drawing, colouring, painting and printing, or using clay, paper, gum and blunt edged scissors for making objects, and tearing, folding, cutting or pasting also foster fine motor development.
