It would be a good idea to start your child on little stories about animals, and Aesop's fables. Enid Blyton was by and far the most popular author of children's works. She has written books for very young children in her Red, Green and Blue storybooks.
The series on 'Secret Seven', 'Five Find-Outers' and 'The Famous Five' are ideal for older children, providing them a fair amount of fun and adventure. The 'St. Clare's' and 'Mallory Towers' books are about life in a girl's school.
The 'Nancy Drew' books are enjoyable for pre teens or early teens. Ditto for the 'Hardy boys' books.
The Harry Potter series deals with witches, wizards, and other magical creatures. These books deal with the need to use your power to fight the evil.
You can also include some interesting and well-caricatured comics like 'Tintin', 'Asterix' and Amar Chitra Katha in the collection. All these books help your children understand some great classics through appealing visuals.
The English classics not only expose your children to the bygone eras, but also contribute vastly to their language.
