Prevention of accidentsAccidents could be the result of many factors viz., the age and sex of the child, his/her personality and intelligence, the result of imitating others and the example set by her parents and friends. They are related to his/her stage of development, his/her mobility, ability to reach objects, to climb, his/her desire to learn and explore and above all, his/her inability to know from experience the consequences of his/her actions.

Managing a child wisely is an essential step towards accident prevention. A child allowed to do whatever he/she wants without being guided is liable to get involved in accidents. A child brought up without discipline is selfish, thoughtless and disobedient. On the other hand, a child who is over protected and is always prevented from engaging in normal activity, because of some anticipated danger, is apt to rebel and get into accidents.

Prevention of accidents needs forethought, time and discipline. Sometimes, warnings such as 'be careful' might just not be enough. Wise discipline includes the immediate stopping of all dangerous practices, such as door banging, throwing objects around the room, running up and down the stairs and the like.

In short, parents have to, on the one hand, get paranoid about dangers and allow their child to be inquisitive, on the other. The key is in striking the balance between the two.
