According to the fitness experts, babies do not move enough today. This is because we overdress them, tuck them into cribs and carrycots most of the time and pick them up as soon as they cry.
Once they start sitting and crawling, we tend to become far too conscious of cleanliness and hesitate to leave them on the bare floor. Even when they begin to walk, we rarely provide them with enough space to explore.
Free early movements by infants, lead to better health, good co-ordination, strong, straight body and happy nature.
Exercise for the Infants
Parents can exercise their infants` arms and legs either when they change their diapers or just before bathing them.
The exercises are simple and involve stretching the baby`s legs and arms.
Hold the baby`s arms wide open and bring them back across the chest 4-5 times. It will open out the chest, giving the lungs a chance to expand. It will also prevent round shoulders.
First grasp the baby`s legs firmly and then press them gently upward, bending them at the knees. The next step is to draw the legs firmly but gently downward until they are straight. This exercise should be repeated 4-5 times. This exercise strengthens the quadriceps.
Take one arm of the baby and raise it above his head while the other is brought straight down his side. Repeat this exercise 4 times, alternating the arms.
Bicycling is a good exercise because it stretches the baby`s legs in opposite directions. Make the baby lie down on his back. Grasp one leg and, while bending the knee upward, stretch the other leg straight down.
Repeat 4-5 times, allowing the baby to kick a few times between repetitions.
