Advice for Mothers:
Breast-feeding provides the best nutrition and protection from illness for your baby. It is also the best and most economical food for your baby. For most infants, breastmilk is sufficient to meet all their nutrition requirements for the first four to six months. Frequent breastfeeding is the best way to establish and maintain a good milk supply. In addition, a well balanced diet, both during pregnancy and after delivery is also essential for an adequate supply of breastmilk. Unnecessary introduction of partial bottle-feeding or other foods and drinks will also have a negative effect on breastfeeding.
Advantages Of Breast Feeding:
- It is much cheaper than any other milk substitute.
- Breast feeding immediately after delivery enables the contraction of the womb and helps the mother to regain her figure quickly.
- It acts as a natural contraception after childbirth.
- It is a complete and balanced food that provides the infant with all its nutrition requirements in the first few months.
- It provides immunity to the infant and protects it from infections in the first few months till the child develops her own immune system.
Management of Breast-feeding:
- Breast-feed your baby soon after delivery.
- Feed your baby on demand. That is, let her suckle whenever she cries or wants a feed.
- Keep your breasts clean. Consult your doctor on the care of your breasts during pregnancy and lactation.
- Let your infant suckle frequently on the breast. This helps increase the supply of breast milk.
