Single Motherhood - A Compulsion or a choice

Motherhood is indeed the most cherished part of a woman`s life. No matter how much a woman complains about her kids driving her crazy, she enjoys every single bit of it (probably not at the time). Being a mother is a blessing – it magnifies the goodness of woman to an extent she had never known of. And as the mother`s day nearing, there`s no better occasion to learn about the compassion, hardships and a special bond of strong fondness in the lives of single mothers.

Is single motherhood a choice or a compulsion is debated very often and doesn`t come up with an answer that satisfies all single moms. A few decades back, being a single mother was tough. The choice was not hers, neither did she have any means of earning to raise the kids. Widowed or separated, women were forced into a second marriage for the sake of children. The age isn`t the same and women are more empowered than ever before.

From being mothers in the yester-years to becoming the supermoms, women have come a long way to learn to overcome the challenges of single parenting. As they venture out to raise kids on their own, they manage their lives along with the kids` extremely well while maintaining their dignity. Most single moms decide not to remarry because they believe that would bring complications in the family.

There`s another lot of women – the philosopher, the philanthropist, the generation Y – they don`t really care what they are really called. They say they are here to make a difference. And when asked about motherhood, they scream out loud that they want to adopt and never get married. They commonly believe that they only want to commit to their children and form a very meaningful bond with the kids so that they are brought up well and have a peaceful childhood.

And then there are women who live their lives for others’ children. Motherhood is indeed a choice for them. Many women in the country have been fostering kids who are abandoned or orphaned, providing for them and sheltering them. These women aren`t well educated and have high paying jobs in the corporate world, they are the unsung heroes living in the outskirts of a town, working on daily wages yet having the compassion to embrace abandoned kids. Despite having a temporary means of earning, they try and help these kids to have a balanced present and a wonderful future.
