As compared to our kids, we, in our childhood days, had lesser resources and more time to spend with our families which actually proved benefiting as we established a communication line with our parents and siblings. But today, kids are more leaned towards TV, Internet, video games and friends which shave off the time they should be spending with their families. Additionally, these days, both the parents have day jobs that also cut down the time they spend their children which results in lack of communication.
Whether about a serious issue or just a usual chat about the day, parents should regularly talk to their children. This helps children learn how to express their feelings which is important for leading a happy life because if kids who don`t feel the need for sharing or expressing themselves at an early age, they grow up be suffering from problems like low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. In addition to that, such kids often find it hard to have successful intimate relationships. It`s crucial for parents to open communication channels with their kids and for doing that. Here are a few simple tips:
Be patient, kind, loving and most of all, a good role model.
Encourage the children to speak their minds while listening to them and talking only after they have finished.
After listening to the entire story, understand what the kid said; analyze the situation and then advice further.
The advice should not come out as a lecture or scolding.
Instead of asking the child why s/he is angry, one should ask how s/he feels. It makes the conversation more open-ended and kids feel comfortable.
One should tell the child that whatever s/he is feeling is fine but should not hurt or disrespect anyone. Tech her/him to act more responsibly.
One should always be honest with kids. This helps them understand what it feels like to share their feelings.
Instead of just assuming what the child is feeling, one should talk about it. It is sometimes very hard to differentiate anger from depression.
Give them enough room to grow and make changes in their communication patterns.
Along with these easy tips to talk to their children, parents should always try and keep everything simple. Sometimes, kids are tired, stressed with homework or hungry. Mothers should try not to make a fuss about it as it may irritate them further. Allow them sometime to unwind themselves and even if there`s no change in the behavior, one should discuss the matter with them. Apart from all that, parents should always let their children know that they are loved, no matter what, and it`s good as well as safe to talk to the parents whenever they feel the need.
