The first few years of a baby are marked by various milestones, like his/her first words, first outing and first steps. The wobbly few first steps of a child bring immense joy to his parents and at the same time, make them realise how well their baby is growing. This is perhaps the biggest developmental leap for the baby and this is why the parents are so anxious about this event. The baby usually takes first steps around the time of first birthday. The range may vary from 9 to 18 months. If your baby is not even crawling by this age, there is nothing to worry about. Some children start straight from walking, bypassing their crawling stage which is perfectly normal. If your baby is rolling around, scooting, walking in his crab or using his hands to climb stairs, probably walking is not far behind.
It takes around 1000 hours for a baby to prepare him/her to walk. You should start from the birth itself to help the baby walk. String back muscles and leg muscles are the basic requirement for walking. Lifting the baby head while they lie on their tummy helps them in strengthening their back muscles. You can also place some interesting toys and object around the baby, just keep out their reach in order to motivate them to walk.
Encourage your baby to keep balance while he/she is able to sit up. Get a ball and roll it towards and away from them. The idea is to make them lean forwards and well as from side to side to keep the balance. When your baby is able to stand up, hold his hands to maintain balance. When you think they have obtained enough balance, let off their hands and let them stand up. See how long they’re able to stand up without lending support. Always take this step on a padded surface so as to prevent any injuries while they are falling.
When your baby is old enough to walk, hold both of his hands and let him walk in front of you. Once in a while, you can also let off your hands or loosely grab it. This will build their confidence to walk independently. Motivate and encourage your baby by cheering them on. Praise your baby on his good job. In case the baby tumbles over, always stay nearby for help.
In case you are too concerned for your baby, you can also consult a physiotherapist to help him walk. There are various fun games available in the market which would help and encourage walking. While you are expecting your baby to take first steps, make sure there are many support systems like bed, chair, and crab around the baby, it would help him in walking with support.
The first few steps of your baby can fill you with immense joy. It is important that you take care of your baby while he/she is attempting the first step as so avoid any mishaps.
