No parents want to hear that their children are bullying other kids in school – while some talk their kids out of it, others avoid the complaints and keep denying the fact their children can bully anyone. Parents should always look into the matter, in case the teachers or other parents are approaching them with accusations. It`s important to take appropriate steps to teach the kids that bullying is not the right approach to behave in school or playgrounds.
If there has been a single complaint about the child being a bully, one should investigate the matter without being partial. Some of the signs to look for are:
The child talks aggressively about other school kids.
He describes his classmates and teachers in a very negative way.
He has toys, stationery or even money that no on in the family has brought for him.
These signs, however, don`t clearly mean that the kid is a bully. Therefore, one should talk with her child about what she has heard, not directly though. She can simply ask a few questions so as to establish a conversation regarding the topic and get a clear understanding of the situation:
How is everything going at school and at home?
Do you find it hard to maintain a balance between both?
In what way do you treat others in school?
Do you get along with other kids?
Do seniors support you and juniors come to seek help?
Is anyone bullying you at school or playground?
Would you like it if you were considered a bully?
While asking these questions, if one gets even the slightest hint that her child may be bothering other students at school, she must take the appropriate steps to solve the issues. First of all, be calm and patient about it, then very politely tell the child that this kind of behavior is not acceptable and it should be brought to an end. Here are some other tips that may help put a stop to bullying:
Instead of yelling at him, try and explain everything about bullying and how it may be affecting the victims.
Ask him why he likes doing it and what drove him into doing such an act in the first place.
It`s important to monitor his use of Internet, video games and mobile phones.
Talk to the teacher and in case it`s going on in the playground, ask the authorities or other parents in order to find out his approach to bullying.
Call back frequently to find out whether or not there is a change in his behavior. One can also ask teachers what she can do from home to put an end to it.
Many kids who had been bullied at an earlier age start bullying themselves. Talk to the child about everything relevant and find out whether he has been through the same. Apart from that, many bullies at school are the victims of violence at home. Stop if anyone in the family is abusive or violent towards the child. Frequent name-calling that goes around in many households (whether or not children involved) also drive children to act in the same manner. Therefore, one has to address these concerns and make life better for everyone.
