Communicating with the Married Daughter

A relationship between a mother and a daughter is the best in the world and probably the most complex as well. Some mothers and daughters are best friends whereas others barely talk, some meet once every couple of days, others live states apart, some celebrate every special occasion together, others don`t even call on birthdays.

Through the entire childhood of daughters, they are inseparable from their mothers – they think of their mothers as a nurturing and guarding parent who will rescue them from every risky situation. As the teenage steps in, things change and plenty of arguing and yelling sessions roll in. And when they grow up, they start to feel the essence of their relationships with their mothers and bond at a different level altogether.

The most difficult phase in a woman`s life is when her daughter gets married and ventures out to begin a new chapter of her life. As much happiness and joy it brings to the mother and she may find herself on cloud nine, her life comes to a standstill afterwards. She becomes joyous for her daughter is settled in her life and at the same time, gets devastated to see her young one flying from the nest.

After the wedding of their daughters, some mothers feel lonely and gloomy so, they call their daughters every other day and go over unannounced, if they live close by. On the other hand, some mothers accept the changes life brings along and don`t wish to bother their daughters by giving them a call. While a mother goes through a troubling time, she must understand that both these approaches are wrong, when it comes to maintaining the same loving relationship with their married daughters.

Mothers should take note that their daughters are trying to settle into a marriage which can be very challenging, needless to mention the amount of adjustment it requires. A marriage may be a responsibility or an adventure for the newly-weds and they definitely require time and space to grow into it. So, overprotective mothers should back off for a while in order to allow their daughters some time to put things together.

This, however, doesn`t mean that mother should shut the communication channels with their daughters. Talking is crucial to maintaining a healthy relationship between mothers and daughters. Therefore, mothers have to wait until their daughters are accustomed to the new lifestyle. Though maintaining distance can be challenging, mothers have to be patient. They should also ensure that communication must not be avoided over an extended period of time.
