Pregnancy is a beautiful state when you flower as a woman and become ready to be a mother. With it come other more cosmetic changes that if taken care of in the right way can make your pregnancy a very beautiful affair. ...Q. Hi, I am a Beta Thalassemia carrier but my husband is not. I have just found out I am pregnant and wandered if the thalassemia would affect my pregnancy in any way?
A. Thank you for your question - If you have confirmed that you are a beta thalassemia carrier and that your husband is not, it is highly unlikely that your child will be affected with beta thalassemia major. This is because thalassemia is a autsomal recessive condition where both parents would have to be carriers for a child to be affected with thalassemia major (carriers are called thalassemia minor). However, you will still need to make sure your husband has a normal MCV and hemoglobin electrophoresis to confim that he is not a carrier of any other hemoglobin variant. If these tests are normal, your child will have a 50% chance of being a carrier, like you, but will not be affected with beta thalassemia major. My best wishes for your pregnancy.
