Varaha is the avtaar of Lord Vishnu when He came down to the earth as a wild Boar to save mother Earth.

The earth was witnessing another round of evolution and this was in the aftermath of the Matsya avtaar.

At this juncture, Lord Brahma, who is the creator of this Universe, brought forth children. They were - Marichi, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Bhrigu, Vasishta, Daksha and Narada. It is believed that these children created the three kinds of inhabitants of the universe - the celestial, the intermediate and the infernal.

Marichi, one of the sons that Brahma created had a son who was called Kashyap. Marichi married some of the daughters of Daksha - the most important of these women folk were Aditi, Diti and Danu.

Aditi was very pious. Diti and Danu were very haughty and proud. The two children born to Danu were terrible Rakshasas called ' Hiranyaksha and Hirankashyap'. The elder of the two demons, Hiranyaksha was itching to fight a war with the Devas as he wanted to rule all the three worlds.

So, Hiranyaksha thought of a plan to hide Mother Earth or Bhooma Devi who was one of the consorts of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyaksha felt that by doing so, Vishnu who loved Bhooma Devi very dearly, would meet him in a combat.

Thus he plunged the earth into the ocean depths, making life on earth impossible. Mother Earth lay deep down under the murky waters. This infuriated Vishnu and he decided to teach Hiranyaksha a lesson. He suddenly came out of the left nostril of Brahma in the form of a tiny miniscule boar. Then he grew to the size of a giant boar. He then plunged down into the ocean and attacked Hiranyaksha who lay hidden there ' as he thought hiding there was the safest place. The boar or the Varaha as it is called found him and tore him to shreds. Then, the wild boar lifted the Earth with its horns from the depths of ocean and brought her back to the surface.

Thus, the Varaha Avtaar was taken by Lord Vishnu to save Mother Earth.
