As the world celebrates International Women's Day on March 8th, we take a moment to salute all women! We salute the power and strength of women, yesterday, today and tomorrow! Being a woman is a matter of great pride! No better person than Grandma to tell you more about it....
At a glance....
- It all started in 1857 on March 8th, when women working in textile factories in the US, protested against the terrible working conditions.
- It was on March 8th, 1909 that the first women's conference was held in Copenhagen, and it formally gave birth to an “International Women's Day"
- Women's demonstrations on this day, in Russia in 1917 became one of the causes for the Russian Revolution.
- It was in1965 that 8th March became an official holiday in Russia, to mark “ International Women's Day"
- The day remains an official holiday in several countries of East Europe.
- In 1975 the UN officially recognized the “ International Women's ay “ and started sponsoring it worldwide.
- It was in 2005 that the British Parliament declared it as an official public holiday in the UK.
Cause & Celebration ....
Women are gifted flowers and women employees receive gifts from employers. But there is a serious facet to the celebration of this day.
The UN has officially endorsed the International Women's Day 2007 as
Ending Impunity- for violence against women and girls
“ Violence against women has yet to receive the priority, attention and resources needed at all levels to tackle it with seriousness and visibility necessary"
UN Secretary General
Eliminating violence against women is indeed a formidable challenge and a panel discussion on the topic will mark the official opening of the celebrations for IWD 2007
Ifs & promises....
Women of India have been deified since time immemorial, and elevated to the level of goddesses.
Today more women are educated, hold plum positions at work, are breaking the proverbial glass ceiling, striding hitherto male career preserves, exercising their choice on when, who and whether to marry.
But what is the reality?
If only the girl child was not aborted.
Or she got the opportunity to educate herself
If there was no gender bias
Or she was not burnt for dowry
If her health was a matter of concern
Or asked to drop out of school
If only she was allowed to breathe free.....
Look around you, and see the position of the Indian woman. If you are Proud to be a Woman, and what you see touches you, write in to us.
