Salt as we know it, is generally used for seasoning food. But according to the notes left by grandma, gleaned probably from some foreign magazines that used to lie around the house those days, there are so many other uses for this cheap, easily available stuff that we are not aware of. Given below are some of the uses you could put common salt to in your everyday life.
- Add salt to the water in which you have arranged cut flowers. They will stay fresh longer.
- Stained hankies, when soaked in salt water, will come out fresh and clean after the wash.
- Sprinkle the pantry shelves with common salt. It will keep ants away.
- Boiling an egg with a cracked shell? Just add a little salt to the water when cooking the egg and it will stay in its shell and not ooze out.
- Want to test the freshness of an egg? Simply put it in salt water. While fresh eggs will sink, the old or rotten ones will float.
- Green salads stay crisp and fresh if you add some salt to them.
- A pinch of salt when added to egg whites while beating them, make them fluffier.
- A little salt rubbed on your griddle will make it non-stick!
- Wrinkled apples get a fresh lease of life if you soak them in mildly salted water.
- Going to use a new toothbrush? Just soak it in salt water before you use them and it will last longer.
- Discoloured coffee pots? Never fear. Use salt to clean it and get it sparkling like new!
