`Let food be our medicines, let medicines be our food` - Hippocrates
Grandma doesn`t approve of synthetics, especially in food. She thinks it goes against the laws of nature. And results in ill health and disease.
Fruits, vegetables, spices, nuts and grains are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. Natural foods have remarkable benefits. Best of all they`re easily available and affordable.
Grandma frowns on processed foods too. "Not only are we starving ourselves of the right kind of food, we`re also stuffing ourselves with the wrong ones. Our bodies have to cope with not just the onslaught of unhealthy foods, they also have to manage without natural ones which will help them battle various ailments. Little wonder then, that obesity, cancer and diseases threaten the lives of people all over the world".
A few tips from Grandma:
Avoid refined wheat and rice. Refined products are stripped of their nutrients.
Refined sugar, sweet syrups and glazes are far removed from their natural state. Their natural fibres and vitamins have been lost in the process.
The human body was never meant to be saturated with fat. Remember that fat is the cause of so many diseases that threaten mankind now.
Too many dairy products are not good for health either. Avoid those that have been processed and transformed.
Grandma also recommends including a few natural `healers` in our daily diets. These foods have natural antibiotics and antioxidants in them. Maybe we have to make a conscious effort to teach our taste buds into accepting natural foods once again.
Turmeric: It contains curcuminoids and has wonderful healing properties. They play an antiseptic role and help heal injuries and infections.
Garlic: A natural antibiotic with anti carcinogenic benefits. Grandma believes that a pod of garlic a day will help keep cancer at bay.
Sprouts: A cup of sprouts will take care of most of the nutrients one needs. Make sprouts a part of your daily meal.
Olive oil: Use olive oil to cook with rather than processed fats like margarine and dalda. Olive oil is low on cholesterol too.
Whole grains should be combined with fresh fruits and vegetables for optimum results.
Remember that simple natural foods are the best medicines we can give ourselves.
