Prayer Crystals

Camphor is a white, crystalline solid obtained from a tree, native to China and Japan. It is formed in the oil-cells dotted all over the tree. On steam-distillation, blue, brown and white fractions of camphor are obtained. It is the white camphor, which possesses medicinal properties and finds its application in traditional medicine.

The blue camphor finds its use in perfumeries. As the brown camphor is reported to contain carcinogens, it is better to avoid it, particularly as a medicine.

Camphor burns with a bright smoky flame and is an important constituent in Hindu prayers, particularly in performing arti. It volatilises at ordinary room temperature and sublimes when heated.

Camphor possesses analgesic and antiseptic qualities. Being a heating substance, it is useful in curing joint and muscle pain. It is extensively used in the treatment of inflammation. It is applied externally in the treatment of open wounds, rheumatism and sprains. It has a pungent aromatic smell, followed by a cold sensation, when applied. In conjunction with menthol or phenol, it relieves itching of the skin. It is used as a bronchial dilator, decongestant and expectorant as it decongests nasal and sinus congestions, clears the mind and cures headaches. It acts on both the nervous and respiratory systems.

A Word of Caution

Internal consumption of camphor may lead to toxicity, resulting in convulsions, delirium, coma or even (in rare cases) death due to respiratory failure.
