A few decades ago, grandmothers played a huge role in our lives. They were important people to deal with.
But with nuclear families, and children moving away to other cities and countries, a lot of young people nowadays barely know their grandparents. They have more of a formal relationship with them. The rapport doesn't exist.
Family bonds are important. All of us stand to benefit from establishing close ties with our loved ones. Here are few ways to forge a bond with grandma.
Accept her unconditionally. The two of you may not see eye to eye on very many issues. But that shouldn't prevent you from getting to know each other. Have realistic expectations from her. And remember, she is going to view you in the same way.
Don't fear the generation gap. You should be capable of dealing with people of all ages. Relate to her and enjoy her point of view - even if cannot work for you.Show her how important she is to you. Let her know that you care for her, in spite of all the differences between you.
Don't be overprotective of her. She may want to take her own decisions in spite of her age - or maybe because of it. Don't make decisions for her without her permission.
Develop some common interests. Wouldn't it be nice to share a hobby with your grandma?
Ask her what you can do for her. It could be accompanying her to the doctor, or buying her groceries. Take the trouble to help out when you can.
Keep in touch regularly. And be there for her in times of need.
Enjoy your grandma! She's a part of your heritage.
