Family tree

Spending a day or so with Grandma? It's the perfect time to draw your family tree. And find out more about your ancestors.

Grandma is the right person to work on this project with. She's bound to know a lot about your forefathers (and mothers!). And this would be something that would interest and excite her. A walk down memory lane    with a purpose too.

A large sheet of chart paper is necessary. But that isn't the first thing you work on. Get a diary or a few foolscap sheets of paper.

Now get your gran talking. She wouldn't need much encouragement doing so! Take down notes.

Let her memory go right back    to ancestors she has never seen    but only heard of. Take down notes on all of them. Forage around in grandma's attic for ancient photographs. Remember, those funny pictures that you never paid attention to?

Dig them out and attach faces to the names in your family tree. It would be nice if you could have a few lines about each person. Not about their virtues, but rather their eccentricities. They're more interesting that way. And it makes better reading.

When you've got all the data you need, you can start working on your chart. Let your creativity show. Make it as interesting as you can.

It's a lovely way to get to your know your roots. And grandma will like it
