They were neat, clean and smelled of soap and the aroma of the kitchen. They were either loved because they were always helping around or they were feared because they were so strict!

Today's grandmothers are young, physically and mentally and they would like to keep it that way. They are fashionable, like to take care of themselves and are also trendy. They no longer wear just a sari or a salwar; they have the latest hair styles, colour their hair and are still working in an office! They are able to play computer games with their grandchildren and often long to beat them at it! They are either pursuing their lifelong passions of travelling, mountain climbing or scuba diving or looking after their grandchildren, not from the comfort of their homes, but in a continent that they are totally unacquainted with!

The grandmother's duty in the present generation is to help build the intelligence of the grandchild, entertain him and discipline him in a way that she did when she was a mother! This, grandmothers do, not by living with them always, but even via long distance ¨C the telephone, the mail and yes, the internet. They are available to the family but only on their own terms. They do not want to consider themselves indispensable, because they would like to enjoy the finer things in life rather than be lumped with screaming, disobedient children.

Yet, there are grandmothers who continue to bake, to clean, and to spend every minute of their time with their grandchildren all because it is their duty; a duty which their children think they are to perform, only by virtue of the fact, that she is their mother! Working couples wouldn't know how to manage without this person; but at the same time, they also don't want to think about what she would like to do for herself! The modern grandmother (like the modern mother) leads a very complicated and compromising life!
