As a child I used to peep into my grandma's room and note with awe the various things she applied on her face. She would tell me with a twinkle that I would understand everything when I was a little older. Years later, going through her little bits of paper tied together with various coloured ribbons, I came across some real gems which are so simple that anyone can easily adapt them to today's lifestyle.
- To make a wonderfully effective home-made face scrub, all that grandma did was to grind together 2 or 3 almonds with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey. This she applied on her face as a scrub to exfoliate dead skin.
- Another excellent scrub that she strongly recommends is to combine one tablespoon of ground walnuts and almonds with 2 teaspoons of honey and a quarter cup of cornmeal. Blend this well and apply to remove dead skin.
- Baking soda, blended with a little water and applied gently on a cleansed face makes for an excellent freshening scrub.
- Grandma also had a couple of excellent recipes for face masks. One egg beaten gently but thoroughly with one tablespoon honey and about ½ cup coconut oil till it is a paste consistency makes an effective face mask. This mixture can be frozen and gently rubbed over the skin and left to dry. Wash and find your face aglow and healthy!
- One tablespoon of skim milk powder blended well with ½ a cucumber (peeled) and a teaspoon of plain fresh yogurt can be applied to the face and left to dry for about ½ an hour. This revitalises dull facial skin and also leave it spanking clean and fresh.
- In a double boiler heat on a low flame 2 spoons of cornstarch, 2 spoons of glycerin and about ½ cup of water. A clear jelly will form on heating. Remove before boiling and cool it thoroughly. Use this jelly instead of soap. You can mix it with a little water if you find it too thick. Using this jelly will eliminate pimples and acne that are sometimes an allergic reaction to soap.
