Ramzan. The Holy month. Id. The celebration of penance and charity. Let us take a look at what this great festival means. Literally, symbolically and spiritually.
Ramzan is derived from the Arabic root word ramida or arramad, meaning intense scorching heat and dryness, especially the ground. From the same root, there is ramdaa meaning sunbaked sand. And the Messenger of God said : "The prayer of repenters is due when the young camel can feel the sun's heat early in the morning."
So, there is an opinion that Ramzan is so called to indicate the parched sensation in the stomach as a result of thirst. Others said it is so called because Ramzan scorches out sins as the Sun burns the ground. Some say it is so called because hearts and souls are more receptive to The Divine during Ramzan, just as the sand and stones are receptive to the sun's heat.
Heat has the capacity to act on all matter and get it in shape and form . Ramzan too helps the seeker remould, reshape, reform, and renew his physical and spiritual disposition and behaviour.
Observing a fast abstaining from catering to the senses from dawn to dusk. Prayer. Charity.Refraining from acts that hurt harsh speech, evil actions. Ramzan is a month for looking inward and scorching all that is impure. Fasting washes away physical toxins. Prayer removes spiritual impurities.
To all our brethren in the quest for spiritual perfection, Id Mubarak.
