The last week of Lent-the Holy Week, begins with the observance of Palm Sunday, which commemorates the triumphant journey of Christ into Jerusalem where millions lay palm leaves at his feet as a mark of respect. Maundy Thursday is celebrated in memory of the Last Supper. Good Friday commemorates the day of the crucifixion. The week ends with Easter Sunday, which celebrates the glorious resurrection of the Lord.

A number of symbols, customs and even foods are associated with Easter. Brightly coloured or exquisitely designed Easter eggs are symbolic of "New Life", which is the essence of the festival. The egg rolling custom and the egg hunt add an element of fun to the festivities.

The famous and much loved Easter bunny (which is also the earthly symbol of Goddess Eastre) is symbolic of the fertility of the earth, which is at its peak during spring.

The Easter lily symbolises the pure new life that every Christian is entitled to because of the death and consequent resurrection of Christ.

The dogwood tree is symbolic of the sufferings of Christ on the cross, as the cross, which he had to carry, was made from this tree. The hot cross buns are symbolic of the bounties of the season.

Celebrate the gift of life- it's precious. Happy Easter!
