Where does the exiled spiritual head of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, live? Where would you find gompas?
Dharamsala
About 55 kms. from Jwalamukhi, on the other side of Chamba, at an altitude of 1,800 metres lies the town of Dharamsala, the centre of Tibetan Art and Culture.
The Dalai Lama, the head of Tibetan Buddhism, has been living in Dharamsala after he fled Lhasa in 1959, following the Chinese occupation.
Dharamsala consists of two distinct parts. They both vary in altitude and temperature. The upper part consists of Mcleod Ganj, Forsyth Ganj and the Cantonment. It is in Mcleod Ganj that the Dalai Lama, and his followers have been rehabilitated. The lower Dharmashala consists of college, schools, markets and administrative offices. Dharamshala is one of the best places for studies and research in Tibetan Buddhism, Art and Culture.
Lahaul & Spiti
Nearly 120 kms away from Manali lie the two remote Himalayan valleys of Lahaul and Spiti.
