One of the major causes of Mental Retardation in the newborn, mostly in the western countries, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, leaves behind permanent birth defects and scars on the infant. Medical studies have drawn the inference that Fetal Alcohol Syndrome occurs in an offspring of those women who drink alcohol during pregnancy. Since alcohol crosses the placental borders and can decrease the growth or weight of the foetus, it results in distinctive visage deformations, damage the neurons and also brain structures. Therefore newborns with the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome have physical, mental, or behavioral problems.

Causes of the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: One of the leading causes of mental retardation especially in countries like the United States or Canada, the cases of such disorder are constantly on the rise. One of the main causes of such disorder is the exposure of the pregnant mother to any form of alcohol, whether it beer or wine or any other hard liquor. However the amount of wine is not estimated, and it is also significant that consumption of alcohol during the prenatal stage does not effect Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in the offspring.

Apart from these physical challenges, the child also develops behavioral problems and cognitive problems, as he grows up. Some of the common behavioral problems are inability to concentrate, stubbornness, social withdrawal, anxiety, hypertension, poor memory, poor language comprehension just to name a few.

Effects of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: If you have just conceived, cut yourself away from any kind of alcoholic consumption. The after effects of it can leave a deep scar in your offspring. The main effect of the syndrome is the permanent damage of the central nervous system and the brain. As a result the child grows up wit several behavioral problems and also low reasoning and cognitive power. In fact there also might be secondary disabilities like mental health problems, and drug addiction as the child grows up further.

Treatment of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Apart from counseling there is not much medication for children born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. However the only way to prevent this disorder in your newborn is to withdraw yourself completely from any kind of alcohol consumption.
