In recent times mental illness has become one of the well known and common disease prevalent all over the world. The increase in number of the patient suffering from mental disorder has resulted in the Mental Health Legislation.

Researches have proved that the behavior of the people towards those suffering from mental illness is not quite appreciable. People have a tendency to ignore the people suffering from psychological disorders. Even in most of the cases the members of the family tend to show indifference towards these people. In most of the cases people become a psychiatric patient due to negligence of the family. When they are further made a laughing stock by the members of their family their mental illness tend to increase.

Again researches have proved that it is the women who suffer more due to psychological trauma rater than males. This may be due the gender discrimination which they face in their family and social circle. Besides they domestic violence and physical abuse also pushes them towards depression and psychological problems. When these people are subjected to more violence they cut a sorry figure in the public. In order to save these people from harassment and torture the Mental Health Legislation was passed.

The purpose of these Mental Health Legislation was to provide a congenial atmosphere for the people suffering from mental health. If any people found guilty of misbehavior with the psychiatric patients they may have to face severe consequences. This is also applicable for the members of the family who often neglect these people and pay little attention towards their recovery. Besides the members of the family also have a tendency to deprive them of weath as well as education. Mental Health Legislation is meant for providing protection to these people.

Besides the psychiatric patients are ignored in their society. This decreases the possibility of their recovery. . Mental Health Legislation also offers protection to these people. Sometimes even the doctors and nurses and the people involved in the mental asylums take little care of their patients. Such acts will prohibit them for showing indifference to these psychological patients.

Mental Health Legislation was also passed to protect the women who have been subjected to regular violence in the domestic as well as in social sphere. These women are most in need of some laws that would protect them from being subjected to harassment.

However no Mental Health Legislation alone can protect the people from harassments until and unless people became aware of their social roles. Hence certain organizations including World Health Organization is trying their best to educate people and create awareness among them. The people who have lost their mental balance due to some reasons which may be a trauma or accidents, depression or anxiety are in need of love and affection which alone can help them to get well. But such feeling cannot be inculcated among individuals by some law. People have to make others feel for the needy. The role of the NGOs are quite appreciated in this regard.
