Mental disorders are a common form of illness among people of all age groups. Neurological disorders are an important cause and affect of mental disorders. To understand whether a person is suffering from mental disorders, certain symptoms can be looked for. If the person is bent on causing physical harm to him self or herself, then the person is definitely suffering from mental disorder. At present there are two standards of classifications of mental disorder. One of them has been set by the World Health Organization and the other has been set by American Psychiatric Association. The classification system, which has been formulated by the World Health Organization, is known as International Classification of Diseases and the one set by American Psychiatric Association is known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

International Classification of Diseases: The ICD 10 or the International Classification of Diseases is a diagnostic classification of international standard set for determining and treating health problems. It is known as the ICD 10 as it has been revised for the tenth time. The fifth chapter of the classification relates to mental health disorders, which has been subdivided into 10 clusters, including the following:

F0 - Mental disorders related to organic and symptomatic problems
F1 - Psychoactive materials affecting mental health
F2 - Mental disorders related to schizophrenia and delusions
F3 - Mental disorders related to affect of mood
F4 – Mental Disorders related to stress, neurotic and of psychological origin
F5 – Physiological aspects affecting mental health
F6 – Problems in the behavioral aspects of the adults and personality disorders
F7 - Retardation in mental health
F8 - psychological development disorders
F9 – Certain psychological factors that may have caused emotional disorders from childhood or early adolescence

Apart from the above there are several other mental disorders, which have not been classified.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: The DSM – IV has five branches under which it has classified all the disorders related to mental and physical health. The first Axis of DSM – IV classifies the mental disorders into 16 categories, which have many similarities with the other group of classification. Some of the disorders, which have been classified under this standard are mental health disorders related to sexual and gender related problems, irregularity in sleeping and eating habits, mood swings, disorders related to control of impulses and disorders related to adjustment with internal and external environment.
