Muraqaba

The Sufi word which describes meditation is Muraqaba. This term literally means "to watch over", or “to keep an eye". In the metaphorical sense, this implies that a person takes care of his/her soul through meditation, and seeks to gain knowledge about his/her surroundings, and the Creator.

Different types of Muraqaba

A variety of Muraqaba techniques are practiced in a number of Sufi schools and followed on a worldwide basis. Different types of Muraqaba

Muraqaba of light – This form of meditation is usually followed by beginners. However, it can also be used as a cure for various diseases. It has the following sub categories:

1.Violet
2.Indigo
3.Blue
4.Torquise
5.Green
6.Yellow
7.Orange
8.Pink
9.Red

Ehsan
Noor (Invisible Light)
Haatif-e-Ghabi (The Unhearable Sounds of the Cosmos)
Names of God – This is used to get acquainted with the various attributes of God
Allah (Proper name of God) – This is the Final level of Muraqaba for names of God.

Middle Level Muraqabas

Moat (Death) – This helps you to get acquainted with Life after Death
Qalb (Heart) – This helps you to get acquainted with the Spiritual Heart
Wahdat (Unity) – This helps you to get acquainted with the reason behind cosmic unity which is actually God's will
La (Nothingness) - This helps you to get acquainted with reduced material objectives, or the non-material universe
Adam (Pre-existence) – This is actually the next level for the Muraqaba of Nothingness.
Fana (Annihilation) – This refers to the Annihilation of Self, which helps you to get acquainted with the alpha and omega of Universe.

High Level Muraqabas

Tasawwur-e-Sheikh (Focusing mind on master) – This form of Muraqaba helps in transferring the spiritual knowledge from the master to the student.
Tasawwur-e-Rasool (Focusing mind on prophet) – This form helps in facilitating transfer of Faiz or arcane spiritual knowledge from the Prophet to the student. For the Muslims, this focusing of mind is done on Prophet Muhammad. People who are followers of other religions make use of their particular holy figures for focusing their mind upon.
Tasawwur-e-Zat-e-Ilaahi (Focusing Mind on God) – This particular form of Muraqaba helps the students to experience the Tajalli-e-Zaat of God.

The Different Stages of Muraqaba

The Sufi saints have on the whole, analyzed their entire journey of ascension and categorized them into Maqamat (stages). Each level however, is generally sub categorized into further sub-levels, but this group formed is an arbitrary one. In fact, some stages can merge with each other or even overlap, particularly during the enlightenment process.

Gnosis of Self

Ghanood (Somnolence) – This symbolizes the starting point of meditation. Meditation by a person leads to a somnolent or sort of sleep state. Further, as time passes by in this state, one reaches a stage between sleep and that of wakefulness. In this state of mind, the person remembers that he/she did see something, but cannot seem to specifically remember what it actually is.

Adraak (cognition) – This stage is again attained with continuous practice in the art of meditation. Following this stage, the sleepy feeling induced by meditation decreases. One is able to receive spiritual knowledge from the subconscious, since the mind at this stage is not suppressed by sleep.

Warood (coming, beginning) – The Warood stage begins when somnolence reaches its minimum level, and sustained mental concentration is maintained. Sight is exhibited when the adraak (experience) becomes truly deep. The spiritual eye becomes functional as soon as the mind becomes focused. During this stage, a person considers himself to be a part of the entire experience, and is no longer a mere observer.
