Uterine fibroids are basically benign tumor that grows in the uterus from the smooth muscle layer and the surrounding connective tissue. It is also known as leiomyoma or myoma of the uterus that usually grows on the wall of the uterus or may extend to bladder, bowel or intestine. The size of the fibroid may vary from a pea to a football, but irrespective of the size; they are benign tumors in females. However, there is no known reason for developing uterine fibroid but a change in estrogen levels relates to developing uterine fibroid. There is a remarkable increase in the rate of developing a fibroid when the level of estrogen is quite high such as a result of pregnancy or contraceptive pills.
Some other causes may be genetic abnormalities, abnormalities in vascular system, alterations in growth factor, etc.

Symptoms:
Uterine fibroids are generally asymptotic at initial stages but at advanced stages, women may suffer from:

  • Heavy and painful menstrual bleeding
  • Frequent urination due to increased pressure on the bladder
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abdominal Discomfort or Bloating
  • Back pain
  • Feeling pressure on the lower abdomen
  • Miscarriage, etc.
  •

Diagnosis:
Uterine fibroids are more commonly diagnosed through Ultrasound, but pelvic examination may also confirm its presence. Ultrasound is generally done when patient reports regular pain or recurring symptoms to distinguish them from cysts, tumors, or other pelvic diseases. MRI and CT scans may also be used to diagnose the presence of a fibroid for a better vision regarding the location and size. Hysteroscope is also used to diagnose the fibroid present inside the uterine cavity. It consists of  a viewing tube that is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.

Treatment Procedures:

Treatment is done while considering many factors such as the age of the patient, severity or size of the fibroid, the amount of pain, heavy blood flow during menstrual cycle, etc. Your doctor may recommend you for surgery or other medical treatment to ease the condition. Your doctor may treat you in one of the following ways:

  • There are certain drugs or medicines that targets the growth of the fibroid or controlling the symptoms
  • Ultrasound fibroid destruction
  • Surgery to stop the blood supply to fibroid
  • Myomectomy to remove just the fibroids within the uterus
  • Hysterectomy that involves the removal of uterus
  • Treating anemia and infection
  • These are some possible ways to treat the females who have developed urinary fibroid.

There is no known way to prevent the occurrence of fibroid or to stop its progression.
