Migraine is a chronic neurological disorder that may occur with symptoms such as headache, vomiting, nausea, etc. In most of the patients a throbbing pain is felt in one side of the head. It is generally pulsating in nature and may last for few hours to some days and patients are generally sensitive to light and sound. Many of the patients can feel the pain before it actually occurs through an aura that includes disturbing symptoms in visual, sensory, language, or motor actions. Migraine, nowadays has become quite common and the major factors contributing to its development are hormonal imbalance, stress, certain food or drugs, etc.

Causes:
There are several biological processes being linked with migraine. Migraine is more likely to occur in:

  • Women than men
  • People who have a history of migraine
  • Women who are pregnant

However, it has been believed that migraine is triggered by stress, certain foods, environmental factors, or many other factors. There is no exact clue of what triggers migraine, but it results due to several factors. It affects blood flow in the brain and surrounding tissue that associates pain. Migraine may be triggered by:

  • Stress
  • Alcohol
  • Exposure to light and loud sound
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Smoking
  • Certain foods such as baked goods, processed, fermented, or marinated foods, dairy products, etc.

Signs and Symptoms:
Warning sign or aura is the basic symptom of migraine, but it usually occurs in only a small percentage of patients. It occurs in either one or both eyes in which patient may feel blurred vision, pain in the eye, temporary blind spot, tunnel vision, etc.
Pain usually starts in one side of the head and most often it occurs in that portion only. The pain may also be felt behind the eye or in the back of the head and neck. Some other signs of migraine are:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Increased urination
  • Sweating

Treatment:
There is no known cure to the disease. However initial treatment generally starts with analgesics for reliving headache, identifying triggers and avoiding them, or antiemetic for nausea. The best way to treat the condition is to identify triggers and then working on its root cause. Consult your physician and follow his suggestions to avoid symptoms becoming severe. Your doctor may prescribe you some medicines for reducing the number of attacks, stopping the migraine once early symptoms occur or reducing pain or other symptoms.

Treat migraine in a right way and follow your doctor's consultation properly.
