How to take care of your kidneys

Kidneys are one of the major organs of a human body as they regulates the excretion of toxic chemicals from our body through urinary tract and liver. Kidney filters the toxins out of the body which if accumulated inside would lead to metabolic poisoning. Kidney other than removing toxic wastes regulate the amount of fluid in the body. Thus, the well-being of humans depends on proper functioning of various body parts, including kidney. Kidney also plays secondary endocrine functions as it secretes endocrine hormones namely, erythopoietin and renin. Many of us develop kidney diseases sometime in our life, especially kidney stones.

Kidney stones are generally formed due to less water intake that results in excessive pain, usually at the time of passing urine. When fluid in our body reduces, there are chances of urinary tract infection or stone formation, thus leading to kidney diseases. To prevent kidney diseases, one should take proper care and some tips that would help you in that are:

Drink plenty of water: Water is the major constituent of human body and it`s adequate consumption is necessary for good kidney health, thus one should drink plenty of water throughout the day. It is better to drink small quantity of water frequently instead of consuming large quantity at a time. One should drink at least 6-8 liters of water to maintain the fluid balance inside the body.

Keep a watch on blood pressure and blood sugar: Those with hypertension and diabetes are at a greater risk of developing kidney disease, thus one should keep a watch on the blood pressure and blood sugar.
Try to keep your blood pressure and blood sugar as close as possible to normal readings as larger  variations may pose a threat to the normal functioning of kidney. High blood pressure affects the small blood vessels in the kidney which in turn are not able to filter toxic waste as they should do. Increased glucose level for a long time may damage the tiny filtering units present in the kidney, increasing the risk of developing kidney disease.

Diet:
A balanced diet is crucial to prevent kidney diseases. Eat a low oil diet and switch your eating habits to more healthy and green vegetables. Fruits and raw vegetables diet keeps your blood pressure in control thus avoiding chances of kidney diseases. Food items high on oxalate should be consumed in limited amount as oxalate gives rise to kidney stones.

Salt: Higher salt concentration in your diet may develop kidney stone so decrease the amount of salt in your diet. Improper sodium and calcium build up in your body through a high salt intake may induce kidney diseases, thus eat salt in proper concentration.

Avoid alcohol and smoking:
Drinking alcohol in excess require your kidneys to work harder to remove toxins from blood. Thus, you should drink alcohol in small quantity or work to quit this habit to prevent kidney diseases. Those who smoke are at an higher risk of developing kidney diseases so discontinue this habit to stay healthy.

Follow a regular exercise routine:
Physical exercise are important to maintain an optimum kidney health so follow a regular workout session to avoid complications.
