At the back of every closet, there lie so many items that haven`t been used in years. And if one digs her own closets, wardrobe or even attic, she will find things that she no longer uses or needs. Moreover, the things that surface during the annual cleanup of the house are impulsively thrown away in the dustbin instead of being given away to those who are in need of them. Hence, one should donate. The word, although, rings a bell about giving away money and getting tax benefits, it doesn`t necessarily have to be a monetary donation.
What can be Donated?
One woman`s junk can be another woman`s valuable. Clothes that don`t fit anymore, kid`s old books and unused notebooks or stationery, old kitchen appliances, worn out bedsheets and drapes, used toys, outdated gadgets and loads more. Rather than keeping them safe in the bedroom closet or kitchen drawers, one must give them away so that an underprivileged can make use of these. Apart from that, one can also choose to donate money to an NGO (non governmental organization).
Monetary help to various organizations is also used for surgeries and treatments such as cleft lip amongst children, breast cancer and others. Apart from that, one can also donate her blood every once in while to the blood bank.
Homework is Necessary
When it comes to choosing the organization or charity to give to, one must do some research and gather all the facts regarding the organization. Running a background check on stuff that it had done in the past is very important to differentiate between credible and fraud charities. Moreover, it assures one that her donation is really helping the needy. In order to elude the fraudulent charities, one should ensure that she chooses a charity that doesn’t:
Give Time
The most important thing one one can give is her time. Instead of sitting in front of the TV or surfing the Internet all day, one can volunteer at a local NGO. It`s a donation that doesn`t cost money but gives a great satisfaction to not only the one volunteering but also those at the receiving end. Most women, of all age groups, are these days engaging themselves in supporting the causes that drive or inspire them.
The good thing about volunteering is that one doesn`t have to commit herself to an organization for a longer period – it can be just weekends, a fortnightly or a monthly act. It largely depends on the amount of time one can take out from her busy schedule and give away to someone she doesn`t know.
So, next time before tossing anything off, one should consider the many poverty-stricken people in the city who will appreciate any help and more than welcome her warm gesture.
