The definition of alcoholism keeps on varying from person to person on the basis of their drinking habits and their craving nature towards alcohol. Alcoholic drinking is often known as alcoholic intoxication. With the increase in the level of alcohol consumption among different breeds of the society, the doctors have also changed the definition of alcoholism to some extent. Psychiatrists define the consumption of alcohol is completely on psychological issues which are related to family and the stress level, on the other hand doctors states that addiction to alcohol is purely due to physical addiction which can be treated through medical processes.
Recent trend has reported that many women have taken up the habit of drinking. Drinking is very bad for health especially when it is consumed on a regular basis. Today many women are giving equal competition to men in terms of drinking alcohol. With the change in time the role of women in the society has also undergone a rapid change, she has now changed her image from the conservative homemaker to an independent corporate worker which in turn has made her get familiar with many new things.
Consumption of alcohol in women is backed by many reasons like delayed marriage, pressure at work, competition at a large level all these factors often disturbs the mental state of the women. Consumption of alcohol affects women more when compared to men due to difference in body stamina and composition. The body of a woman consist more fat and less water as compared to a man, so when she consumes liquor it gets accumulated in blood once it entered her body.
Research states that alcohol is not fully processed in a female body and thus it starts getting accumulated in the blood stream, causing many big problems in the future. Females easily get intoxicated during the period of menstruation. Females who are exposed to daily drinking or who consumes a large amount of alcohol face greater risk than male who are a regular drinker. The probability of women getting many health issues due to access drinking is more as compared to men who drink regularly. The consequences of access drinking are similar among men and women but women are more exposed to diseases such as heart damage, liver problems, brain damage and many more. Heavy consumption of alcohol leads to menstrual problems, early menopause and often infertility. Consumption during the adolescence often interferes with growth, puberty, and health of women. Drinking in higher ratio can often lead to sexual assault, prone to violence, unprotected sex and this can even lead to the transmission of diseases during sexual intercourse.
It is highly recommended by doctors not to consume alcohol during the pregnancy. Alcohol has teratogen which affects the fetus very badly. The alcohol cross the placement barrier and reaches the blood stream of the fetus, once the alcohol accumulation in the fetus’s body exceeds there are less chances that the unborn baby will survive and many a times faces death inside the mother’s womb. Thus it is advisable that pregnant women and woman who is planning to conceive should avoid alcohol.
