Riya: By the way why Memorial Day is celebrated and what is its significance?
Alisha: Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday. Memorial Day commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. Memorial Day is the time to remember and honor those who risked their lives to protect the countrymen and the country. Previously it was enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. After World War I it started including American casualties of any war or military action.
Memorial Day observes a moment of silence for the fallen heroes, feel proud on our brave hearts and pay tribute to their sacrifices. The day celebrated the freedom, courage and dedication as you salute all.
Riya: Tell me more about Memorial Day celebration.
Alisha: Memorial Day is federal holiday. All banks, offices, colleges and schools are closed. It's a great way to spend time with your family and friends. On this day people socialize with their loved ones. People spend time feasting, socializing and spending quality time with each other.
Family's watch ships parade in the harbor, see competitions and musical performances by sailors. Big Apple in New York's Times Square is also a big attraction. The Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade in Queens, New York is billed as the largest Memorial Day Parade in the US. In various places like Chicago parades begins with a wreath-laying ceremony.
Riya: What are your plans for the Memorial Day celebration?
Alisha: Well I've sent the Memorial Day patriotic greeting cards and e-cards to my friends, families and relatives. On the Memorial Day I'll be resting in my house, try to cook elaborate sumptuous dishes for the dinner and try to spend maximum time with members of my family.
