Wedding jewellery

Chutti: Chutti is the ornament worn on the head. It is usually only worn by the bride on her wedding day. No one else in the bride's party usually wears this decorative piece.

Tika: Tika is the ornament that is worn on the forehead. It usually has a centrepiece that glitters. This is supposed to add radiance to the bride's face.

Ear Ornaments: Earrings are, and always have been, very popular in India. You have studs that centre around the pierced ear hole. The danglers that hang below the ear. One also has an option of having another piece that would run upwards along the ear. Ear chains are frequently worn to bear the weight of heavy earrings.

Nose rings: Nose rings are very popular in India now. Almost every body in the wedding party will wear a nose ring for the wedding, even if they haven't got their noses pierced. Little nose rings usually are of floral design and have a sparkling stone set in the centre. But the bride usually wears something more glamorous. Her nose ring is usually attached to a gold chain that is fastened to her hair.

The bulak is also a kind of nose ring. It is hung on the cartilage between the nostrils. It usually has a pearl drop hanging from it.

Necklaces: Necklaces are common the world over. Indian brides usually have a choker worn right round their necks. A slightly longer necklace that nestles follows this on the chest. This piece usually has a predominant pendant that will sparkle amidst the bridal finery. Then comes the long chain or 'Kasu mala'. It comes down to the abdomen.

Arm Ornaments: The main arm ornament is made up of loops of gold with its end not quite meeting. It's usually designed as a snake coiling around. It symbolises the endless universe.

The bangles worn at the wrist are symbolic of marriage. Bangles have a special connection with brides and married women in India. Bangles could be made of glass, gold, or inset with precious metals    But they're an essential part of being married, and stay with a woman all through her married life.

Bangles, armlets, bracelets and other arm ornaments are designed very differently for brides in different parts of the country. Bridal bangles are sometimes made of ivory, bone, conches and black thread. These are so designed as to protect the bride from the evil eye or negative forces of life.

Girdles and belts were very common in Ancient India. But not too many girls believe in wearing them nowadays.

Anklets are usually worn on the feet. The anklet produces a pleasing musical sound every time the bride moves her feet.

The marriage is solemnised, again with jewellery. The groom ties a mangalsutra around his bride's neck. They then become man and wife.

Toe rings are also slipped onto the bride's toes to declare her a married woman.
