Punjabi weddings are extravagant and a big event for both bride and the groom. They are celebrated on very large scale. Punjabi weddings are almost a month long preparation. Wedding songs and dance plays an important role in any Punjabi wedding.
There are series of events and customs performed in the Punjabi Weddings. Since ages Punjabi wedding are known for their fun, celebration, of course, the wedding songs and bhangra dance. When it comes to celebrating, Punjabi’s are always in the lead. And nothing can be as better as the occasion of a wedding in the family.
Few of the Rituals are mentioned below -
Roka /Saith– It is a small ceremony which is performed as soon as the couple agrees to wed. It is an announcement made by boy and a girl that they will no longer look for a life partner further and their search ends here. The function is generally performed in the presence of family members.
Sagai/Tikka- Some people also do the engagement on the same day else it is a separate function all together. It is a ritual of exchanging the ring between the couple. A lot of gifts are exchanged between the parties. Chunni Chadai is also a part of the ceremony where mother in law gift a sari/ chunni to the girl along with some jewelry. Wedding songs are played and both parties dance and enjoy on the tunes.
Mehendi ceremony – It is one of the biggest ceremonies performed one day before the wedding. Mehandiwallis who are specialized in applying mehendi are called to the boys and girls houses. Bride applies mehendi in both hands and legs. Elderly ladies sings the wedding songs and everyone dance on its tunes.
Wedding day -
Chuda ceremony is a ritual where pandit ji performs haven and oldest maternal uncle presents chuda to the girl. Chuda is basically a set of red and cream ivory bangles which a girl wears the set for minimum sawa month as a sign of newlywed. After that, the girl’s uncle, aunt, friends and cousins tie kaliras to a bangle worn by the girl.
Vatna ceremony involves applying the paste to girl and boy all over. The paste is made from turmeric powder and mustard oil. Elderly women in the house sing wedding songs in chorus.
Ghardoli – in this ritual the bride’s sibling visits the nearby temple and fills a pitcher with holy water; later girl baths with this holy water. Weddings songs are sung by the ladies from the girls side while coming back home from the temple.
In the evening Sehrabandi function is performed. The groom’s father or any elderly relative ties the "sehra" on the groom’s head. Then the baarat reaches singing and dancing on weddings songs and music to the venue.
At the Venue - The bride`s family waits to greet the baarat. The bride is brought out and the couple exchange garlands the ceremony is known as vermala. The wedding concludes with the pheras, where the couple exchange vows in front of the holy fire and Sindoor ritual when the groom applies vermilion to the girl.
