Blood Pressure Machines are comprised of a Blood Pressure Monitor for reading the pressure, a rubber tube fitted inflatable cuff to be wrapped around the upper arm, along with a stethoscope and a squeezable rubber bulb. The Blood Pressure Machines have evolved from complicated and elaborate set ups to simple digital high tech Blood Pressure Monitor by the turn of this century.
In general the type of measurement of Blood Pressure can broadly be classified into two categories:
1.Invasive Monitoring, or, Measurement
2.Non Invasive Monitoring, or, Measurement
The Invasive Monitoring of the Blood Pressure doesn`t involve the customary Pressure Machines, but involves controlled and monitored penetration of the skin to record the Blood Pressure inside the Blood vessels. The task is performed in the hospital under the supervision of Medical Personnels and never by an amateur for measuring Blood Pressure.
The Non invasive Monitoring of the pressure however involves these Pressure Machines and Cuffs along with the stethoscope and the pumping apparatus in case of manual measurements. Nowadays digital measurements donot involve stethoscope, which actually functions to record the systolic and the diastolic Kortokoff sounds for an accurate recording of the readings. The Blood Pressure Apparatus, which comprises of the complete set from the Blood Pressure Monitors and cuffs to the pumping device and stetho back up, has manifold functionalities.
1.The Monitor record the readings in the systolic and the diastolic pressure.
2.The cuff is the prime most device that is wrapped around the upper arm of the patient whose pressure is to be monitored and the function of the cuff is to get inflated with the aid of the pumping device almost completely blocking the blood flow through it. When the pressure in the inflated cuff is slowly released the blood flow is again slowly resumed and sounds of the swishing flow can be recorded.
3.The recording of the sound is done by the Stethoscope which is to be place on the cusp of the inner elbow just below the place the cuffs are wrapped. The sounds that are heard as the blood flow is slowly resumed are recorded and are known to be Kortokoff sounds. The 1st one records the systolic pressure and the 4th one the diastolic pressure. In modern digital Blood Pressure Machines such accurate recording is not required to be done manually but the recording function is mechanically programmed to take place in unison with the pressure release.
As a matter of fact there are several types of Non invasive Blood Pressure measurements, among which the most common one uses the Blood Pressure Machines fitted with stethoscope and is known to be the Ausculatatory Method. Along with the Stetho a Sphygmomanometer is also used which is a mercury based manometer. Other types of Blood Pressure Machines include electronically functional pressure sensing devices called transducer that detects the flow of arterial blood. Apart from conventional Pressure Machines and Cuffs non invasive monitoring are recently more accurately administered using computer monitored back up devices that measure the transient artery pressure in form of pulsating wave signals along with properly sensitized receiving apparatus for the involved radio-transmissions.
