Hypertension Diet Tips

Hypertension if left unchecked can pose threat to the health of an individual. The condition cannot be cured, but it can be controlled through lifestyle changes and taking the prescribed medicines. Following a strict diet and a modest lifestyle can significantly improve the condition and help one to stay fit. The hypertension results due to the increased blood volume in the arteries, narrowing of the arteries or heart diseases. The causes of hypertension may vary, but diet plays a crucial role in developing high blood pressure. Those who eat without considering their weight and other conditions generally develop hypertension, if not early in later life. Those who have hypertension can reduce the complexities and those who don`t have hypertension can prevent it with good dietary habits.

Some diet tips for hypertension patients are:
  • Salt should be eaten as per specified by your physician.
  • People with weight issues should avoid eating fatty foods, sweets and other foods high in calories.
  • Butter and cheese are a big no-no for hypertension patients.
  • Chips, baked foods, and junk food should be avoided to improve the condition.
  • Increase the intake of food rich in fibre such as raw fruits, cereals, etc.
  • Canned and tinned food should be avoided.
Vegetarian food: Vegetarians are at lower risk of developing high blood pressure as compared to those who eat meat, poultry or fish. Vegetarian diet helps in maintaining a normal blood pressure thus reducing the chances of hypertension occurrence. Even those who have hypertension should switch to vegetarian diet to reduce the complexities.

Alcohol: Alcohol consumption should be avoided by the hypertension patients as it can result in acute hypertension in some patients. Those who do not have hypertension can reduce their chances of developing the condition by quitting alcohol consumption.

Salt: It has been found that those who eat salt in higher amounts are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and strokes. Thus, one should eat salt in a considerable amount to reduce the complications or risk.

Weight: Other than eating habits, your weight plays a major role in developing hypertension and other medical conditions. Obese people are at a higher risk of developing hypertension thus engage in physical activities to maintain a healthy weight.

A good lifestyle and eating habits help you to stay fit and active. Exercise or engaging in some other physical activities helps in maintaining a healthy weight and thus reducing the risk of developing hypertension. The condition can be controlled to live a healthy life by practicing a good lifestyle.
