So you have a new dog. Are you prepared to face your existing pets and their insecurities? Where will the other pets figure in your list of priorities? Your spouse and children will now have to divide their time between the new dog and the old pets. How a dog gets along with the other pets, depends largely on the temperament of the existing pets. If a puppy or puppies are between two to twelve weeks old, they normally get along well.
Here are some pointers to a friendly pet environment at home.
When a little puppy is brought into the house, where there is already an older dog or cat, it is better to show affection to the existing pet. The existing pets can get moody and may refrain from eating. The confidence of the existing pet has to be won over.
When an older dog is brought into the house, it is generally believed that the new dog will try and dominate over the existing dog or pets. The new dog may snatch the food from the existing pets. In such cases, one member of the family should handle the new dog only.
If there is a cat in the house, when the new dog is brought in as a pet, there could be problems from the cat. The cat has to be treated with love. Both the pets have to be fed separately. Gradually they will understand each other. The pets should be lodged separately. Feeding must always be done on different bowls or dishes.
Pets require play and training in order to have a harmonious atmosphere. Members of the house have to cooperate.
Pets require love and affection and last, but not the least reassurance from all the members of the family.
