Doves - A symbol of Love and Peace

If you're tired of the mad rush and noise around you, the right pet for you would be the 'dove'. Doves, as we all know, are symbols of peace and love the world over. The main reason for this is doves are by nature soft, calm and gentle creatures. They are very beautiful and soothing to the eye.

Here are a few points that Indian women should keep in mind while raising doves as pets.

  • Buy doves that appear healthy. The feathers should be tight and smooth. If the feathers appear to be pecked, it is a sign that they are infested with parasites.

  • Doves tend to be attached to their environment and will require time to adjust. So, if you have other pets, place the doves at a distance from them.

  • Use spacious cages at least 2 feet in height so that the doves can move around. Allow them to walk and fly around specified places in your home. Place paper towels or napkins where the doves normally perch, for the droppings.

  • Doves are essentially seedeaters. Some also eat fruits, boiled eggs, breadcrumbs and cooked peas. Doves dehydrate easily, so give them plenty of water.

  • Doves need calcium for bone development. Crushed eggshells and sand are good sources of calcium.

  • Avoid leaving them in total darkness.

  • Doves are not very intelligent creatures. The most they can do is perch themselves on your fingers. Train them to do this from when they are two weeks old.
