Fishes are pleasing to the eye when they are healthy, but the chances of fishes getting infected are many. What can you do about it? Here are some suggestions to help you along.

  1. Leeches and other parasitic infestations can be removed by pressing an alcohol soaked cotton swab on them. The fish has to be lifted out of the water for this treatment.

  2. In the case of visible parasites like worms, gill-flukes or white spots on the body of the fish, a saltwater dip will help.

  3. 'Ich' or Ichthyophthiriasis is a condition where the protective coating of the fish gets destroyed. It is the most widespread disease that affects freshwater fishes. Although treatment is difficult, there are medicines like Super Ich that help control Ich.

  4. External bacterial infections that manifest themselves in the form of red or orange spots or streaks and internal bacterial infections can be cured with the help of tetracycline and penicillin.

  5. Dropsy and columnaris, which are white or grey films on the body, can also be cured with tetracycline and penicillin.

  6. Diplopstomiasis or small black spots on the body, is also a common problem in fishes. These are signs of infection. It is better to have your Vet treat them.

  7. Corney bacteriolysis is a condition that results in bulging eyes. This could be mainly due to overcrowding the aquarium or the poor quality of water. It can be cured with penicillin and tetracycline.
