Kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the home. We spend many hours a day in the kitchen. It is a place of many overlapping activities of cooking, gathering, communicating, relaxing and dining. Therefore it is important to make your kitchen more functional, pleasing and a place to communicate.
Let us see what you must keep in mind while building your kitchen
Top-class modular kitchens, with architectural elements such as crown moldings, latest appliances and stylish hardware and fixtures have become the highlights of today's Kitchen decor
Use oak wood if you want a Classic kitchen. For a contemporary look, use fine grained wood. Countertops could be mixed and matched with wood finishes having different textures.
You could think of a separate room for a kitchen or you could allow the kitchen space to merge with the dining space.
The most preferred, shape for a kitchen is U-shape as it allows the person to make best use of the 'work-triangle'. Other popular shapes are L-shaped kitchens, Galley-shaped kitchens and island kitchens.
You could have glass cabinets to show off your best china and cutlery and have wooden panels to hide the daily use utensils.
Space should be reserved to accommodate cooking range, ovens, dishwashers and sinks.
Make sure that kitchen counters are durable, look beautiful and are easy to clean. Most commonly used materials are granite, slate and marble slabs.
Kitchen needs the most storage space with lots of hidden storage areas too and you can mix and match rollout shelves, vertical tray dividers and pullouts and drawer inserts. In base cabinets, rollouts improve accessibility by bringing pots and supplies out to you. Drawers of varying shapes and sizes used in or between upper and lower cabinets increase storage and add design interest.
Floors and lighting
Flooring selection is one of the most important decisions to make for the kitchen. The flooring should match the kitchen design and should give your kitchen the contemporary look. The latest trend is the wood flooring, which easily blends in with floors for adjoining rooms. Tile flooring provides easy maintenance and durability. Tiles which are skid free are a good option. It's important to choose flooring material consistent with the rest of the home.
Go for neutral colours as they are cool and also budget friendly.
Recessed adjustable lighting and decorative lighting fixtures spotlighting your kitchen island or dining area adds a dramatic effect to your kitchen decor.
Kitchen plan
Kitchen plan should make your movement in the kitchen easy and all your cooking supplies and appliances should be within your reach with ample room to turn and walk between the cabinets easily. There are safety issues too along with the kitchen design. Especially with kids, you need to plan the kitchen that is not within their reach. Cabinets with magnetic locks and a small dining table in the kitchen where children can be with their moms while she is cooking is a good idea. Good kitchen plans accommodate users' varying heights, age mobility limitations, dexterity, and, most important, the changes in those elements, which, inevitably, come with, time.
'The working triangle'
Ergonomic planning in the kitchen, especially in a small kitchen, makes working much easier and is based on an activity center with sink, fridge and cooking range being the three corners of the 'working triangle'. The distance between these three most used areas of the kitchen should be such that the cook can easily access all of them.
The key to doing up your kitchen is to think about the large amount of time that you and your family spend there. Accessibility, safety and convenience are primary goals when doing up your kitchen. Your kitchen should be comfortable, yet a functional room. A place where stories can be shared as dinner is being prepared!
