Don't you think it is time to bid adieu to boring beiges and creams on walls and instead welcome vibrant colors such as red, green, yellow etc.Colors enhance the look of the interiors. These days, there are umpteen options in color palettes and you can paint your walls in kaleidoscopic colors. While there are no set rules, there are certain hues that are more appealing to the eye than some others.
What are they? Read on.
Colour palette
- Varying shades of red. They are commonly found in dining rooms and libraries, but are becoming very popular in high usage rooms such as kitchens and bedrooms as well.
- Pure orange is a sought after colour too. The only problem is that it sometimes appears too bright and is therefore used as an accent colour only.
- Yellow has different effects depending upon its tone. Choosing an appropriate shade can create the desired mood in a room.
- Electrifying blues and emerald greens give a royal look to the room.
- Pastel colours, though not very sought after, have its own share of takers. They create a comfortable and airy feel in the room.
Neutral colours for the less adventurous like black grey and white are commonly used as they blend with any color well.
Colour culture
Depending on the size of the room you could choose two or more shades on your walls, but remember too many colors will overwhelm your house and too few will give it a monotone look.
Keep the following points in mind while painting your walls
Dark and Light- Light colours will make your room seem larger, while dark colors will make it look small. Dark colours could be used to accentuate one wall.
Harmony and Contrast-Contrasting colours will bring to light the architectural details in the room. Take care, as extreme contrasts will clash and actually detract from the details.
Safe color choices- The safest way to paint your walls is in earth tones, browns, tans and beige. If the ceiling is painted white then you can experiment more with your walls.
Durability- Dark colours sometimes pose more maintenance problems as they absorb heat and suffer more moisture problems than the lighter shades. They also fade easily.
Sheen- See if the paint you have chosen has sheen -glossy, semi-gloss or flat. The glossier the surface, the more likely it is to show defects, brush strokes and touchup marks, but glossy surfaces are also easier to clean. Choose flat paint for walls and semi gloss or gloss paint for doors and windows.
Colour deceptions-Colours look very different when viewed indoors and outdoors. Also, colours appear lighter on large surfaces than they do in small samples. So, it is best to test it on a small patch of wall before deciding the color.
Also remember
- Be consistent with your colour. With the doors of your rooms open, find out how much of each room you can see from the adjacent room.
- If you decide to start with a favorite pattern, match your colours to the pattern. Colours that are very different in the pattern can be highlighted with different shades of the same colour.
- If you like changing the colour scheme in your home often, then go in for neutral colors on your walls. Use accessories in bold colours to enhance the look. When you feel like changing the look simply redecorate the accessories.
- Use one wall in a room as a focal point. Paint the wall a complementary colour or a darker shade of the main colour in the room.
- Try to choose colours to match the furnishings of the room.
- Colours can be creatively used to create illusions. For example if you paint a ceiling in a darker colour than the walls, then it gives the feeling of a low ceiling.
