Are you aware of the fact that the colours you choose for the rooms of your home will reflect your own personality? This also plays an important part in representing the feelings that most people associate with different colours - Yes! Colours do have a strong psychological impact on most people but` what we list below need not be the norm. Take them more as broad generalisations and remember that each culture or even each individual may have differing views.
- Colour selections will turn out best if they are based on the activities or predominant tasks that are performed in each room.
- Every colour has different tones. Warm tones are present in all colours. Use them for places of activity and use cool tones for restful spaces.
- Use contrasting colours for a stimulating effect. For example, for a child's bedroom, you can play with contrasting colours and shades which will reflect the liveliness of the occupant. At the same time you could use a less dense shade in some areas to soften the effect. Use colours like orange and blue, or even purple and yellow while adding the soft effect with a cream or lavender shade with these.
- Always remember that by using shades of monochromatic colours like light green/dark green (shades of the same colour) or ones that are adjoining each other on the colour wheel (like green and yellow) will add to the restful calming effect.
- Surround yourself with colours that you are comfortable with and this will help to lift your spirits.
Going by these general rules, colour pundits have listed the following qualities for particular colours.
- Green, the colour most associated with nature, promotes harmony, peace, stability. It is best suited for bedrooms and family rooms. When the colour green is worn it automatically gives the wearer freshness and elegance. The colour is supposed to help cancer patients.
- Orange is a colour that denotes excitement and vibrancy. Therefore it improves the appetite and is conducive to social interaction. Because of this associaton, this colour is best suited for the dining room and the kitchen.
- Mauves and pinks are eternal favourites. They symbolise romance and are the automatic choice for bedrooms. Also used in bedrooms are peach shades, blues and greens as these are restful shades. For example a blue night light when used in a bedroom can actually stimulate sleep.
- Warmer shades of blue serve to reduce stress and tension. They can be used in bedrooms and bathrooms.
- Purple is a strong favourite and can be used in any room as it can comfort and relieve strain.
- Red on the walls is said to raise the blood pressure.
- Yellow is a sunshine colour and can brighten up any room giving it a cheerful air. It is supposed to help arthritis patients because of its wavelength and density.
- Grey, black and white are generally used in kitchens and bathrooms. These colours are generally associated with cleanliness as they are stark and restful.
One must remember that all colours can have a negative or a positive effect depending on the density and extent of colour use. For example, red when used in larger spaces actually has a positive effect as it is welcoming, energising, nurturing and invigorating. The negative aspect when used in a large space is that it can convey aggressiveness. But the same colour, when used in a smaller space can either convey cosiness and intimacy or become (negative) claustrophobic. So play with colours but use them wisely if you want them to have the desired effect on your home.
