Tonnes of things to do and you feel tired just thinking about it. You are the kind that thinks that there is absolutely no time to do anything at all! You watch in wide mouthed wonder when your friend is able to take her two under-six-year olds to swimming, tennis and piano classes, hold a full-time job as an architect, organise parties for the families in her apartment building, write articles for the local newspaper, bake the occasional cake, go to all the latest bargain counters and pick up the very latest in ethnic wear and still find time to think of other profitable things to do! Phew!!

Here are some time-tested ways to manage your time and complete the tasks.

  • Enlist the help of lists. Get a day planner with daily pages for to-do lists. This way you can not only list tasks but also prioritise them. Without a plan, the tendency is to jump to whatever task comes to mind.

  • Suffer from the how-fast-can-I-cross-it-off-my-list syndrome? It's easy to be drawn to simple tasks instead of the most valuable ones. So invest 10 minutes each day (over your morning coffee, perhaps) to number tasks in order of importance. By doing so, you'll transform yourself from 'busy' to 'productive'.

  • Look at the big picture, but don't let it overwhelm you. A big project is nothing but the sum of several tiny blocks to complete a low priority task or a small piece of a big project.

  • Group related work together and you'll spend less time on time-consuming tasks. Schedule them in sequence and stride past procrastination one simple step at a time.

  • Answer the question "What's the next step?" This is not your end goal... "What is your immediate step?" is the question you need to ask yourself. This strategy works whether you're painting your bedroom or helping your child fill out college applications.

  • Learn to use little bits of time. It's rare to find two hours of uninterrupted time. Practise using a 15-minute time slot to change your train of thought throughout the day. Then you'll find that time management is not so difficult after all!
