A list of sewing tips that you could use:
- Threading the needle becomes easier if you cut the thread at an angle.
- When you are tracing a pattern, hold the tracing paper in place with your wrists. Move your wrists along the edge as you trace.
- Keep a pair of scissors handy when you're sewing. You will find many uses for them like removing snagged threads or removing excess stitches.
- If thread colour is being rubbed off on your machine, your thread is of poor quality and should not be used. Poor quality thread will have a fuzzy or 'hairy' appearance.
- Use a 'space tape' to make sure your buttonholes are evenly spaced. (Space tape is a transparent, removable sticker tape with buttonhole markings.) You place it on your garment, make your buttonholes on top of the tape where they are marked, and then tear the tape away. Make your own space tape if you are not able to locate it at any craft supplies store.
- When stitching, do not push or pull the fabric. This will cause the needle to break under the stress. You only need to guide the fabric in front of the presser foot while stitching.
- If your stitches are wavy, it means the stitches are too small for the fabric. Correct this by lengthening the stitch.
- If it puckers, check the tension. A seam will pucker if the tension is too tight. Also, try decreasing the presser foot pressure and use a finer needle.
- If the thread loops on the underside, tighten the needle tension. Ensure that the thread in the needle and bobbin weigh the same.
- To make your sewing more efficient, always sew as many seams as you can before you press them. Always press your seams, for it gives the garment a more professional look.
- If you have a ready-made garment that you want to match fabric to or buy another item of clothing to go with it, consider carrying a spool of thread or a button that matches it. This is a lot handier than carrying the garment with you.
- When you have sewing you want to get done and feel as though you don't have any time to sew, try sewing for at least for 5 to 10 minutes everyday.
- Keep a small notebook with the amount of fabric needed for the most common patterns you use in your purse. If you come across some fabric that you cannot resist, you will know exactly how much you need to buy.
- Always make sure you have all the thread you need for a project before you actually begin working on it. There is a possibility you will not get the exact shade when you are in a hurry.
- Spread a sheet of paper under your sewing table and chair while you sew. It will catch all the pins and threads. When you are all done, just scoop it up and your floor is clean.
- Always sew with the best quality threads and needles. It saves that much of trouble.
