  • Are wood floors creaky? Then sprinkle some talcum powder between the floor boards. This will fill in the tiny gaps caused by shrinkage and any imperfections in the wood.

  • If noisy door hinges drive you crazy, a spritz of vegetable oil should take care of the minor annoyance.

  • Unable to hammer in a nail without pounding your fingers in the process? Use the tines of an old fork - instead of your fingers - to hold the nail in place.

  • Here's how to hammer in a nail without splitting a plaster or drywall surface: Drop the nail into a pot of hot water for 15 seconds; drain, remove carefully and hammer in. The heated nail softens some of the surrounding plaster before penetrating it, thus preventing cracks and splits.

  • Another way to keep plaster from chipping when you drill or hammer into it is to cover the area with transparent tape before you start.

  • Never drive two nails into the same grain line - it will cause the wood to split. Instead, be sure to stagger nails along the grain of the board.

  • Blunt the tip of the nail first by simply tapping it lightly with the hammer to prevent the wood from splitting.

  • Screw won't budge? Pass a lighted match over the end of the screwdriver. The heated tip will expand slightly and fit more snugly in the groove of the screw making it easier to twist out.

  • To make it easier to insert a screw into wood, rub the screw shank across a candle stub or a bar of soap.
